Description
1920 Mack ACCD Wrecker Pumping Engine
750 GPM from Baltimore City Engine Co. No. 7
Ahrens-Fox Fire Engine Company was the leading proponent of the piston pump with the big compression ball on top from 1911 until 1952. Similar pumps had been used on the horse drawn steamers of the previous century and it was logical that the designers of early motorized pumpers should incorporate the reciprocating pump into their plans.
After a few years of experimentation, most manufacturers dropped the type of pump in favor of the rotary, and then the centrifugal (after 1927), laving the field to Ahrens-Fox.
Right hand drive was standard until c.1927 as it was an advantage in parking in front of hydrants. Windshields and canopies were untidy obstructions in the driver's view.
Restored to 1939 appearance in 1970.
Heaver Collection. Vehicle No. 1
On display at The fire Museum in Maryland.
