Description
1911 American LaFrance 'Type 8' Roadster - American LaFrance produced a total of 22 passenger cars during a 10 year period in the early 1900's. This "Type 8" Roadster is the only complete example that is known to survive today. Fifteen cars were built for sale to the general public. The remaining 7 automobiles were built for experimental purposes, as Fire Chief's cars, for executive uses, or as racing cars. This example was built as a race car, as indicated by the simple canvas mud guards and bare-bones bodywork. American LaFrance withdrew the car before it ever raced due to a tragic accident, however the car was used on public highways near Elmira, New York until 1923. This "Type 8" was located in a storage barn in 1972 and was restored in 1987 for American LaFrance.
This vehicle is on display at the beautiful American LaFrance Museum in North Charleston, South Carolina, Courtesy of American LaFrance, LLC.
